"As an Asian American artist, I am fortunate to have embraced the modalities of art and culture of the East and the West in my paintings.

The void is an integral part of oriental art, beckoning us to rest and breathe deeply, as if in awe of the subject, drawn-most often-from nature. The visible areas of my work are done with a few economical strokes that evoke the essence of the subject. The values, tones, density, form and shapes are all encompassed in one or two brushstrokes.

As part of the completion of my painting, poetry, prose and calligraphy, as well as name seals, are placed within the artwork and are harmoniously balanced.

Shirley Pu Wills

Born in Tokyo, Japan, of Chinese parents, Shirley Pu Wills first displayed her artistic talents at the age of five. Wills was a gifted child, as well as prolific and creative. When she was seven, her family came to the United States and settled in New York City. Wills received her BFA from Pratt Institute in 1974.

She currently lives in Morristown, New Jersey with her husband David. She teaches Chinese brush painting at the China Institute of America in Manhattan and the New Jersey Center of Visual Arts in Summit, New Jersey, and each year gives a slide-lecture and demonstration on Chinese Brushpainting at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey.

Wills is represented by the Simon Gallery in Morristown, New Jersey. She is a founder and President for life of the New Jersey Sumi-é Society and also a standing member of the Pen and Brush, exhibiting frequently at their location in Manhattan.

Three of her New Jersey san-sui or landscape paintings are hung at the Dirkson Building near Capital Hill, Washington, D.C. at Senator Torricelli's office. Recently her work has been shown at the Morris Museum and at Paper Mill Playhouse Gallery in New Jersey, and at Virginia Field's Office gallery and at Pen & Brush in New York City.

The composition is rendered spontaneously without a preliminary sketch. It is unpredictable and thrilling to watch. This art form is affiliated with Oriental philosophies such as Taoism and the practice of Tai-Chi. The flow of life or "chi" is at the seat of the soul of my painting.

I believe my involvement with the process of painting is karmic in nature. The brush and my hands are one with my heart and mind and thus commanded by a higher source rooted deeply in the realm of consciousness where dreams flourish."
