Karin Ulrike Soika

Karin Ulrike Soika was born in Munich, Germany, in 1966. She studied art in Munich, at the Malschule am Glockenbach, and completed her studies at the Art Students League, New York City. Currently she is residing in New York, U.S.A., and Munich, Germany.

About her current work she writes:

"In 2001 I traveled to India for several months. For years I have had an interest in herbal medicine (HealingWISE) and wanted to experience Ayurveda in its country of origin. Being there I could not but be deeply moved by the situation of the Indian woman. Out of my experiences I developed a series of paintings that deal with the topic of "Sati", the burning of widows, a ritual forbidden in today’s India, but occasionally still practiced in some remote regions.

Generally speaking, new focal points emerged from my current work: one is the relativity of our reality concept in a world of multiple cultures and world views. The other is colonization of the American continent and the influence of the Europeans - hereby reflecting my own situation as a European living in the Americas ("Mandalas of Peace and Passion")."

Early in 2003 Soika also started a series of ink drawings that deal with the artistic and musical achievements of the American jazz singer and pianist Shirley Horn.
