Sung Sook Setton
A native of Korea, Sung Sook Setton has lived in Germany and England,
and now resides in the United States. She studied at the Berliner Kunst
Academy in the late seventies. From 1986–1989, she studied with
Chinese painter Paul Chan and calligrapher Yang Mu in Oxford, England.
She then continued under the master of the Literati Painting genre, Min
I-Sik, in Korea from 1992–1994. In her work, she harmonizes these
cultural influences by drawing on the wisdom of East Asian Masters while
exploring new ways of expressing Western themes. Through a minimalist
approach typical of Asian landscape art, Setton brings forth the essential
nature of her subjects through subtle brush strokes on rice paper. She
has exhibited in solo and group shows in New York, Washington, D.C., Connecticut,
Alabama, Minnesota, and Oxford, England.
