Patty Kim
Patty Kim was born in Seoul, Korea. When she was nine years old she immigrated
to the United States. Before she could speak English she communicated
with others through drawing. She received her BFA from Rochester Institute
of Technology and MFA from the School of Visual Arts, focusing on painting
and illustration. At the School of Visual Arts she worked with many established
artists and illustrators, including Thomas Woodruff and Marshall Arisman.
Kim has worked in a variety of capacities as a visual artist. She was
a billboard painter and a staff illustrator for two newspapers during
college. As a freelancer, she created commissioned pieces for individual
clients and magazines. After her graduate studies, she worked as a graphic
designer and art director in New York. In 2001 and 2002, she won Best
of Long Island awards for her design work for Newsday. Currently she focuses
on her painting and teaches Design at Long Island University in Southampton,
New York. She was awarded an artist’s residency project for 2003
at the Lamb’s Theatre in Times Square. Patty Kim’s paintings
have been shown in galleries in New York, San Francisco and the Midwest.
She lives and works in Long Island, New York.
