Ellen Hsiao
Born in China, Ellen Hsiao immigrated to the United States at the age
of ten. She studied at New York University under Esteban Vincente and
later received her BFA from Cooper Union in New York City, with graduate
work at Pratt Institute. Since 1990, she has been studying classical Chinese
calligraphy. Though her paintings reflect her Western upbringing and education,
she feels a strong affinity for the Chinese Literati tradition where art
is created for oneself and a few friends, with the belief that the way
to better one’s “art” is to work on one’s understanding
and spirit first. Hsiao has exhibited in many galleries in New York City.
Her works are in public and private collections including the Cooper-Hewitt
Museum and the City University of New York.
