BRIGHT SPOTS IN CHELSEA
In August, I saw “Aggregates,” held by
the Asian American Women Artists’ Alliance
at Ceres. One sweet small mixed media piece by Seungyeon
Lee looked like a hillside with trees sticking up out of
snow. Abstract C-Prints by Nana S. Park were distinguished
by attractive metallic colors and simple compositions. C-prints by
Cindy Lange, showing snow on dried grass, were also
effective, while Chie Nishio’s 40 8 x 10 photographs
of faces of senior ladies made even old age look good. Camila
Valdeavellano contributed two strong charcoal drawings of
nudes, and Yan Kong was seen to good advantage, especially
in “Brush and Ink on Rice Paper #8,” an open, loosely-brushed
composition with clear browns and blacks. Haeley Kyong
showed a lovely row of abstractions with geometric shapes in delicate,
pale colors. Of these, the friend I saw the show with liked best “Inside
+ Outside,” a vertical picture. At first, I preferred “One
World, Many Visions,” with 6 12-inch squares, but then decided
that my friend was right. We both went ape for “Free to Graze”
by Paula DeLuccia, a marvelous warm medley of floral
colors, laid on with a bewitching combination of brush strokes and
blobs. I know that such paintings aren’t easy to make, but I
still felt that here was an ode to the sheer joy of painting. Other
artists were Hwa Young Caruso, Imelda Cajipe
Endaya, Soonok Jung, Jasmine Shwufen
Lee and Songmi Lee.
